YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE RETURNED TO THE ART & ANTIQUES MARKET
After several years of up and down business in the antiques trade, this year has shown great buoyancy and renewed interest by people of all ages. For the past few years, we have had fewer than normal of "the younger generation" visiting our shop here in Wells, Maine; however this year they're back!
THE FARM is again full of energetic, interested and informed collectors, dealers and decorators. The Buzz is Back! The "new" trend in interior design, art and antique collecting is to mix fine quality art and antiques of all ages; the emphasis being on quality and design. We have sold original Gould bird prints of the mid l9th century, exquisitely framed, to discerning collectors who have areas of contemporary furniture, as well as, areas of antique furniture. They mix in both places brilliantly. Superb l9th century ship paintings go to homes populated with elegant l8th and l9th century furniture, as well as, homes on the coast of Maine with a more relaxed atmosphere.
Many of our clients who work with decorators are insisting that "this time round" they're going to use antiques and expand their art collection to give their home a more distinctive and individual flair. They are looking for quality and rarity, when they find it, they buy it.
The younger generation is anxious to learn about what they are buying. They want to become well informed collectors, they want their homes to reflect their wide ranging interests and they want to be able to discuss their purchases intelligently with their friends. As an owner of an elegant antique shop, these new collectors are delightful additions to our family of clients.
We travel to England to buy our fine paintings, furniture and porcelain. While traveling through the British Isles we talk extensively to our friends who are in the art and antiques market. The interesting thing is, they too, have found that young people are discovering the antique market, buying high quality furniture, paintings and accessories of all sorts. After several years of rarely seeing young people in the market, it is a pure pleasure to see them discover the world of owning and living with antiques and to help them build a collection of high quality.
So it's not just an American phenomenon, it's happening in England, too. That bodes well for the antiques and art market world wide.
