It is important to include fiber in your diet, but Kathy Angel Lee might convince you that it is part of a well-rounded art collection as well. This month’s Brick Wall Artist at ‘In a Bind’ gallery in Biddeford will feature Kathy’s textile creations. An opening reception is to be held in conjunction with Biddeford’s Art Walk at the gallery in WiggleWeigle’s Bookstore, 25 Alfred Street, on Thursday, August 30th from 5 to 9 in the evening. Kathy Angel Lee brings a new dimension to nature by using textile as her artistic medium. Much of her works are of local sites and interest. “The Pier at Sunrise” (located in her home of Old Orchard Beach) shows the silhouetted structure against a sherbet sky, and a framed box creates a charming self-contained vignette on summer life. It is a nice image from a far-away glance, but a remarkable construction on close examination, as hand-painted fabrics and individual thread painting reveal the intricacies of the morning light as only an imaginative quilter could render it. Although Ms. Lee says her work “is more representational than abstract,” her large textiles radiate life through the colors and symbolic shapes alone. The large piece entitled “Step Into the Colors of the World” uses a variety of muted colors to represent the hues and shades of skin tones around the world. Curved pieces are stitched together, emulating body shape. At the center, a mirror asks viewers to literally see themselves in the work. Whatever is ultimately taken from this piece—self-affirmation, comfort, diversity—there remains an abstract hope, for culture to co-habituate as gracefully and warmly as it does on Kathy Angel Lee’s quilt.
