Janet grew up in New Zealand, worked in Australia and is now a full-time artist with an art studio at her home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Watercolor is her medium of choice although she sometimes paints in other media. When Janet began painting she was very comfortable with realism but was not interested in developing a photorealistic style. She liked to reduce what she was seeing to abstract shapes and now paints these shapes in flat color with clearly defined edges.

To quote Skip Lawrence, her mentor and teacher, you could describe her work as “New Realism based on visual accuracy without unnecessary detail.” New Realism was an artistic movement that started in the 1960’s. Wikipedia describes it as a group of artists who “saw the world as an image from which they could take parts and incorporate them into their works.” This is a good description of Janet’s work where she appropriates reality for her own purposes. This results in distinctive paintings of landscapes and people which are clear, crisp and usually brightly colored.
