Austill began her arts studies at age 12 with a Hungarian silversmith, and later studied sculpting in ceramics studios. She continued with drawing and sculpting studies at Parsons School of Design, New School (NY), and Portland (ME) School of Art where she discovered two new mediums that became the foundation of her work which she has been producing with regularity -- paint and plaster. During her art studies in Portland, Lori participated in summer fellowships at Yale University. The Dance Series is inspired by attending the 1996 Fourth International Women’s Conference in China where Lori had an opportunity to “connect and brainstorm with artists from all over the world.” “These paintings on plaster have given me limitless opportunities. My goal in China was to work with artists to break our isolation as artists and collaborate on building ideas and communities in which artists can flourish. As a result of this phenomenal opportunity my dancing figures series was born. I returned home with a rich awareness of how powerful people are as creative humans and just how crucial it is for us all to keep the fires of art and hope burning.” All works are plaster with acrylic paint.
